The Golden Temple is one of the most renowned temples situated in Amritsar, Punjab. The temple is situated near the border of West Pakistan and is a place of beauty and serenity. It is regarded as the most sacred Gurdwara or worship place, for all Sikhs in the world. The temple stands as a symbol of religion, culture, faith and tradition with its amazing architectural splendor.  The actual name of the temple is Harmandir Sahib, meaning “Temple of God” and is also named with due respect as Darbar European (meaning “court of the Lord”).

 A Brief History:

The temple during 1870
There was a big history behind the construction of the Golden Temple. 2000 years after Lord Buddha, another philosopher-saint named Guru Nanak, who is known as the founder of Sikh religion, came to measure and meditates by the peaceful lake. After the death of Guru Nanak, his followers frequently visited the site and over the centuries it became the first sacred shrine of the Sikhs.
According to ancient Indian history in the year 1574 Mughal emperor Akbar gifted the location to Bibi Bhani, daughter of Third Guru Amar Das, as a marriage gift. Bibi Bhani married Jetha, who later becomes the Fourth Guru Raam Das. The lake was enlarged and construction of temple site started during the leadership of the fourth Sikh Guru (Ram Dass, 1574-1581), and through the leadership of the fifth Guru (Arjan Dev, 1581-1606), the Harmandir Sahib, or Temple of God was engineered. From the first 1600s to the middle 1700s the sixth to tenth Sikh Gurus were perpetually concerned in defensing each their faith and their temple against Muslim armies. On varied occasions the temple was destroyed by the Muslims, and every time was restored superbly by the Sikhs. From 1767 onward, the Sikhs became strong enough with good militarily powers to repulse invaders. As a consequence, peace came back to the Hari Mandir.
